How to Choose Your Island: A 5-Step Guide

Step 1: Set Your Budget

Start by defining your per-person budget (including flights) — this will immediately narrow your options:

  • Under $1,500: 4-star islands, about 20 options
  • $1,500–$3,000: 5-star islands, about 60 options
  • $3,000–$4,500: Premium 5-star islands, about 50 options
  • $4,500+: 6-star/ultra-luxury, about 50 options

Step 2: Choose Your Transfer Type

There are three ways to get from Malé Airport to your resort:

Transfer Duration Cost Experience
Speedboat 15–60 min Affordable Convenient, available 24/7
Seaplane 20–50 min Expensive Aerial views of atolls, daytime only
Domestic flight + speedboat 1–2 hours Moderate For distant islands

Tip: For your first visit, consider a seaplane transfer — the aerial view of the Maldives atolls is truly breathtaking.

Step 3: Pick Your Room Type

Maldives room types fall into two main categories:

  • Beach Villa: Step directly onto the sand — ideal for families with children
  • Overwater Villa: Built over the ocean with glass floors to watch the fish below — the ultimate romantic choice

Most guests opt for a beach villa + overwater villa combo to enjoy both experiences.

Step 4: Select Your Meal Plan

Plan Includes Best For
BB (Bed & Breakfast) Breakfast only Budget-conscious, happy to order à la carte
HB (Half Board) Breakfast + dinner Most popular choice
FB (Full Board) All three meals Don't want to worry about food
AI (All-Inclusive) Meals + selected activities + drinks Generous budget, hassle-free

Tip: HB or FB is a great balance — grab a light lunch at the pool bar and enjoy a proper dinner in the evening.

Step 5: Match Your Interests

Filter based on what matters most to you:

  • Honeymoon: Look for privacy, romantic services, sunset-facing villas
  • Family: Look for kids' clubs, shallow lagoons, family rooms
  • Snorkeling: Check snorkeling ratings, reef condition, marine life
  • Value: Look for promotions, off-season pricing
