Packing Essentials: Your Ultimate Maldives Packing List

Must-Bring Items

Documents (Most Important)

  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
  • Flight itinerary (digital copy is fine)
  • Hotel confirmation (digital copy is fine)
  • Travel insurance documents

Sun Protection (Essential)

  • Sunscreen SPF50+ (bring at least 2 bottles)
  • After-sun care (aloe vera gel, etc.)
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun hat

The UV rays in the Maldives are extremely strong and sunscreen gets used up fast. You can never bring too much.

Snorkel Gear

  • Snorkel mask + snorkel (highly recommended to bring your own)
  • Rash guard / UV protection top (for sun protection and scratch prevention)
  • Fins (optional — available to borrow on the island)

Bringing your own mask is more hygienic and ensures a proper fit. Rental ones on the island may not suit your face shape.

Electronics

  • Phone + charger
  • Portable power bank
  • Power adapter (UK-style, three rectangular pins)
  • Waterproof camera / GoPro (optional)
  • Drone (optional — some resorts prohibit drones, check in advance)

Medications

  • Stomach medicine (digestive issues are common when traveling)
  • Motion sickness pills (speedboat rides can be rough)
  • Band-aids / adhesive bandages
  • Insect repellent
  • Any personal prescription medications

What NOT to Bring

  • Alcohol (prohibited at customs)
  • Too many clothes (you'll wear swimsuits and beachwear daily)
  • Formal attire (unless staying at an ultra-luxury resort)
  • Large amounts of cash (credit cards are the main payment method)
  • Hair dryer / toiletries (provided by the resort)

Cash & Money

  • US dollars in cash: $300–$500 is more than enough
  • Mainly used for tipping
  • Bring small bills: $1 and $5 denominations
  • Use credit cards for larger expenses

Packing Tips

  1. Use packing cubes: Organize items by category for easy access
  2. Dry bag: Keep valuables in a waterproof bag
  3. Carry-on essentials: Keep passport, phone, and wallet with you at all times
  4. Check-in luggage: Put sunscreen and liquids in checked bags
  5. Leave some space: You might want room for souvenirs on the way back
